President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that US Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen has left her post in the Trump Administration. In a letter to the President, the 46-year-old said she had decided that the time had come to resign.
The President thanked Nielsen for her work and announced that the office should be provisionally led by Kevin McAleenan (47). He is the current U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner
For some months now, there had been speculation that Trump was dissatisfied with the work of Nielsen on border policy, one of the core issues that got him elected. The Republican had allegedly accused her of not being able to handle the situation on the southern US border with Mexico.
Trump, whose main campaign promise was to build a wall there, has suffered several defeats in his immigration policy. For example, Congress denied him the sum he wanted for the Wall, which is why Trump imposed a National Emergency to get the money from other pots.
All these have resulted in Trump looking at letting someone else handle the border issue and get him better results.
